Gas relief for BJ’s sales

Natick-based BJ’s Wholesale Club posted second quarter net income of $36.3 million on total revenue of $2.3 billion, compared to net income of $26.4 million and revenue of $2.1 billion for the same period a year ago.

The quarter’s results include a $1.4 million loss the company took after closing two ProFoods Restaurant Supply clubs.

But sales for the quarter were up 8 percent to $2.25 billion, and same-store sales were up 3.7 percent, the company said. The company said its sales were helped along by the sale of gasoline at certain stores.

Also during the quarter, the company repurchased 1.2 million shares of common stock worth about $43 million.

The company runs 175 BJ’s clubs in 16 states.
