Gas prices to keep rising

Courtesy | State House News Service The local prices of gas is the highest it's been in six months.

The price of gas locally is at its highest point in six months and nationally the average price of a gallon of gas is higher than it's been since 2015 -- and analysts say prices will continue to climb.

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular is $2.60, a AAA survey of Massachusetts gas stations found, up six cents from the previous week but still 11 cents below the national average of $2.71.

The local price is the highest it has been in the last six months and the national price is higher than it's been since the summer of 2015, AAA said. At this time last year, the average price of gas in Massachusetts was 32 cents lower at $2.28.

"Prices at the pump have hit their highest point in the last six months, and will likely continue to climb -- based on higher crude oil prices, geo-political tensions driving anxiety regarding oil supplies, and the seasonal switchover to the summer gasoline blend, which typically adds a few pennies to pump prices," Mary Maguire, director of public and legislative affairs for AAA Northeast, said.

As the weather turns nicer and more drivers hit the road, AAA spokesperson Jeanette Casselano said motorists "can expect gas prices to increase another 5 to 10 cents this season, but the national average is not expected to reach the $3 mark."

AAA said its recent gas price survey found a 37-cent range in prices in Massachusetts -- from a low of $2.42 to a high of $2.79.
