Gardner's efforts to clean up and redevelop the former Garbose Metal Co. property will get a boost from the state.
The site has been named one of five Brownfield Support Team Round II sites around the state.
Along with sites in Chicopee, Chelmsford, Attleboro and Brockton, the Gardner site will be offered assistance from a team of experts from various state and federal agencies.
The first round of the Brownfield Support Team program spent more than $8 million in 2008 at five sites, including two in Worcester and Grafton.
Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray named the five new sites today in Chicopee.
Soil, groundwater, sediment and surface water at the city-owned Garbose site are polluted with petroleum, metals and PCBs. The property is part of the city's Mill Street Corridor redevelopment effort in South Gardner, formerly a heavy manufacturing district.
