Seaman Paper Co. in Gardner has partnered with Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota, Florida, and Italian organization, One Ocean Foundation to fund research and conservation efforts.
Seaman has launched an initiative called Sea the Difference, which aims to increase awareness of the risks of plastics in the oceans, according to a Tuesday press release from the Gardner company.
The effort is tied to the company’s Vela product line, which seeks to replace plastic packaging with paper-based recyclable packaging.
"Nano- and microplastic pollution in the oceans represents one of the most concerning, least understood, emerging consequences of rising plastic consumption," Michael Crosby, president and CEO of Mote Marine Laboratory, said in the press release.
Seaman Paper Co., founded in 1946, is a fourth-generation family-owned global paper company, specializing in wrapping and packaging materials. According to the WBJ Research Department, it employed 329 people in Worcester County and 529 worldwide as of March.
