Moon Hill Brewing Co. of Gardner has launched a new non-alcoholic brew called Dry Water, entering it into the growing marketplace for non-alcoholic beverages that taste similar to hoppy beers.
Moon Hill’s offering is hop water, a beverage infusing sparkling water with hops and other flavors.
The market for non-alcoholic drinks to replace beer has expanded in the past few years as many people dealt with the anxiety and isolation of the pandemic with alcohol. People want to feel healthier without giving up the taste of beer or the social aspects of having a drink with friends.
A 2021 study by Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston found excessive drinking by U.S. adults increased by 21% during the pandemic, which it estimated will lead to 8,000 additional deaths from alcohol-related liver disease by 2040.
The market has responded with non-alcoholic beers and hop water that emulate the popular hoppy flavor of IPAs.
Large breweries like Sam Adams in Boston and Brooklyn Brewery in New York, now offer non-alcoholic IPAs, while major California brewers Lagunitas Brewing Co. and Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. offer hop water.
Locally, Soul Purpose Brewing Co., Worcester’s Greater Good Imperial Brewing Co.’s sibling brewery released a non-alcoholic IPA called NANA in February.
