The City of Gardner was awarded a $200,000 MassTrails grant by the State of Massachusetts on Tuesday, adding on to the total amount of funding for the town’s proposed bike trail expansion.

The town had previously received $245,000 from the state in previous trail grants, as well as $185,000 appropriated from the town’s free cash expenditures, to bring the total number of funding to $630,000. The money is intended to be used for a proposal to extend the North Central Pathway Bike Trail from its existing location behind the Gardner Veterans Memorial Skating Arena to Route 140 via Park Street.

“I’m very excited to see this project moving forward thanks to the grant funding we have received,” said Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson in a press release. “This project has been something we have talked about for quite some time in Gardner, and this funding allows us to get it off the ground and brings this proposal one step closer to reality.”

The MassTrails Grant, awarded by the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, provides funding for communities, public entities and nonprofits to create or maintain nature trails throughout the state. The $200,000 grant given to Gardner is among the higher range of funding awarded by the grant, designating the project as demonstrating critical network connections of regional or statewide significance, according to the press release put out by the City of Gardner.

Once completed, the proposed bike trail would connect through the towns of Gardner and Winchendon, up to the New Hampshire border. The trail is intended to connect to another proposed project, a pedestrian multi-use bridge over Route 140 in Gardner.
