The University of Massachusetts Medical School laid off 63 administrative staffers yesterday and has eliminated another 27 unfilled positions.
Mark Shelton, a spokesman for the school, said the personnel cutbacks were made “to both improve our business operations” and “target the scarce resources toward mission-critical functions.” Shelton also said that both state and federal funding to the school is “likely to be reduced in the future.”
The laid-off workers were notified yesterday.
Shelton could not say when the last time the medical school laid off any employees, but did acknowledge that it was “not a typical occurrence.”
