Framingham State University has received a $40,000 grant to expand access to higher education opportunities for low-income, underrepresented and first generation students.

The funding, from the Commonwealth Dual Enrollment Program, will be used to provide opportunities for high school students to take college-level courses and earn credit toward high school completion and their future college degrees. The goal of the dual enrollment program is to increase the number of high school graduates who are college ready.

“Preparing students for the rigors of college-level courses while they are still in high school eases the transition to college and makes it more likely that they will succeed,” FSU President F. Javier Cevallos said in a press release. “This is a fantastic opportunity to provide underrepresented students with greater access to early college programs.”

Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester was also awarded a grant of $32,400 from the program to fund dual enrollment.

“We are excited that this CDEP Grant will enable us to offer credit courses to students in schools that to date have not had access to this type of program,” Christina Hebert, director of educational partnerships K-12 & early college initiatives at QCC, said in a release.

The Massachusetts Commonwealth Dual Enrollment Partnership provides opportunities for Massachusetts high school students to take college-level courses for free or at a discounted price and earn credit toward high school completion and their future college degrees, according to the programs website.
