Free Website Aids Recycling By Business

Massachusetts and six other Northeast states have launched a free web-based recycling clearinghouse that can help businesses and other organizations save money on items that would otherwise be tossed in the trash.

The state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) said the site, The Reuse Marketplace, will help businesses find, sell, trade or give away many reusable and surplus items. Businesses in the Bay State, as well as in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont, can become members by creating free accounts and posting listings for available items.

“Providing individuals and institutions easy access to recycling services is the challenge that The Reuse Marketplace is aiming to solve,” said DEP Commissioner Kenneth Kimmell. “People want to recycle because they know it’s the right thing to do, and business wants to reduce costs, so giving them the opportunity to work together is the ultimate goal.”

As a regional materials exchange, The Reuse Marketplace (http://www.reusemarketplace.org) replaces individual state materials exchanges and allows for material to flow across state borders. The site includes more than 30 categories of items ranging from agricultural to textiles, as well as more than 60 related subcategories, according to a statement from the DEP.
