Franklin Logistics Company Keeps Expansion Local

KWL Inc., an international shipping company with operations in Franklin, has purchased a new facility on Liberty Way in conjunction with an Arizona-based logistics firm, according to the registry of deeds.

KWL President David Kuchrawy and a number of top executives from Champagne Logistics purchased 15 Liberty Way in the Franklin industrial park on May 20 for $4.3 million from Campanelli Construction.

The 92,490-square-foot industrial building was built in 1996 by Campanelli for FedEx, according to Richards Barry Joyce & Partners, which brokered the sale. RBJ&P said the building will act as a new corporate headquarters for KWL and Champagne.

The master-planned industrial park provides quick access to I-495 and the Massachusetts Turnpike, Campanelli said in announcing the sale.

"The building was designed specifically for FedEx in the mid-90s for rapid and efficient overnight distribution," said Robert DeMarco, partner with Campanelli. "KWL's business needs are a perfect fit to use the building in its current configuration."

It wasn't clear as of press time the exact nature of the relationship between Champagne Logistics and KWL. Executives for each did not return calls seeking comment.

But it appears Champagne has had a presence in Franklin for more than a decade. Champagne principals have another corporation, VTS Massachusetts (a transportation and logistics company), listed at a Franklin address. That firm was incorporated in 2001, according to state records.

Champagne also lists KWL's West Central Street facility as one of its distribution centers. It lists others in North Carolina, Texas and Arizona.

RBJ&P said the southern I-495 region has 3.3 million square feet of so-called "flex space," which offers a combination of industrial and office space. As of March 31, the submarket had only 7.3 percent vacancy.
