Framingham-based Avery Dennison RBIS, a $1.5-billion division of California-based Avery Dennison, said it will expand its relationship with a major food and apparel retailer in the United Kingdom.
Avery Dennison RBIS, which employs 20,000 people in 50 countries, has supplied radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to Marks & Spencer PLC for the past nine years. Starting this year, Avery will supply the tags for all clothing and home wares in M&S stores.
RFID tags help track inventory and are a more efficient alternative than using optical scanners, Avery said in an announcement. Optical scanners can log between 400 and 600 items per hour, while RFID scanners —which detect the tags from up to a meter away — can scan up to 15,000 items per hour, the company said.
Avery Dennison also has a fastener division in Fitchburg.
