Hopkinton architect Gorman Richardson Lewis Architects has completed the renovation of the space learning center at Framingham State University. Christa McAuliffe Center for Integrated Science Learning underwent a full redesign to become a fully equipped simulation center.
The newly updated center is intended to promote interest in space study among elementary and middle school students who use the facility, according to a Tuesday press release from GRLA. The center was originally built in 1994, and the renovation updated its technologies to be in line with state-of-the art modern Challenger centers.
The center is named after Christa McAuliffe, one of the astronauts who died when the space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after takeoff in 1986.
The center includes a mission control simulation center, a spacecraft, and a planetarium. The simulation aspects were completely redesigned as part of the renovation with updated infrastructure and capabilities. The center’s lobby and common spaces were updated to accommodate larger gatherings and fit with the theme of the simulations.
The planetarium updates include a new projection system and moveable seats for a more interactive and engaging experience.
