Framingham State University has been recognized as an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution for its service to a growing percentage of Hispanic and Latinx students.
The designation by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities comes as FSU has seen its Latinx and Hispanic population grow from 4% to 17% in the last decade, according to a release from the university. The emerging designation is given to schools with representation between 15% and 25%.
“We’ve worked hard in recent years to diversify our student body at FSU to keep up with the changing demographics in Massachusetts,” Framingham State President Javier Cevallos said in the release. “Recognition as an emerging HSI validates this work and hopefully makes us a more attractive option to other Hispanic and Latinx students around the state seeking to pursue their bachelor’s degree.”
There are 23 public and private colleges in Massachusetts that are either HSIs or emerging HSIs. The other local emerging HSI institutions and the percentage of Latinx and Hispanic students are: Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner (15.7%) and Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester (19.5%).
