The best college fashion program in New England is located not in a ritzy locale like Boston or Newport, but right in Framingham.
Framingham State University's fashion design and retailing major was ranked as the top in New England and 38th in the country by the website Fashion Schools. It was also the ninth-best in the East.
Framingham State announced its inclusion on the list on Tuesday. Topping the list was the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
Fashion Schools, a website for college fashion programs and jobs, ranked colleges based on what it said was admission data, graduation success, reputation and an extensive proprietary survey conducted with school and industry stakeholders. For Framingham State in particular, the website noted "small class sizes and individual attention, state-of-the-art computer technology, 'dynamic' merchandising and design opportunities, study tours, and business and industry partnerships."
The school's fashion design and retailing program is guided by an advisory board that includes executives from TJX Cos., Brooks Brothers, Reebok, the Paper Store and others.
