Framingham State Completes $7.1M Efficiency Project

Framingham State University has converted its fuel oil power plant to a natural gas system, which it says will result in a reduction in its carbon footprint of up to 30 percent.

The $7.1-million project also included the replacement of 7,500 lights with more efficient fluorescent lamps and the installation of a high-efficiency electric chiller in the school's library and solar panels on two buildings.

FSU expects to save $735,000 a year over the next 20 years from the project.

FSU signed an energy performance contract with the state's division of capital asset management and maintenance (DCAMM) and NStar in order to meet stricter state requirements enacted in 2007.

The school is splitting the cost of the project with DCAMM. FSU is assuming debt service of $3.6 million.
