A Framingham selectman who opposed converting the state's largest town into a city is now gearing up to run for mayor.
Charlie Sisitsky told the News Service he is "strongly considering" running for mayor and said his current plan is to enter the race.
"I've got the training and experience," said Sisitsky, a selectman since 1998 who spent his career in municipal government, serving for two decades as planning director of Natick.
A 71-year-old Democrat whose cousin served in the Senate from Springfield, Sisitsky said the Board of Selectmen never took an official position on converting the town into a city and he didn't join the opposition campaign but it was "no secret" he opposed it.
Rep. Chris Walsh, a Framingham Democrat and architect who supported changing the town into a city, is also "very strongly" considering a run.
A recount Monday of the tight April 4 referendum reportedly confirmed that voters decided to switch to a city form of government. Elections will be held in the fall to select the first mayor of Framingham.
Sisitsky said he would not accept the full $187,639 mayoral salary, and said it is more than any other Massachusetts mayor makes.
