Elevation Brands, a Framingham-based maker of allergy-friendly and gluten-free foods, has signed a partnership deal with Boston-based Slade Gorton to become a bigger source of those types of foods for suppliers and restaurant operators, the companies announced.
The two firms will offer fish sticks and filets, chicken patties, French bread pizza, chicken nuggets and other products. The alliance will target schools, institutions, workplace cafeterias and other facilities, they said.
"This partnership is a natural fit," Chuck Marble, CEO of Elevation, said in a statement. "Each of us brings a proven strength to the table — ours as a manufacturer and pioneer of allergy-friendly foods consumers can trust and (Slade's) as a trusted, long-term provider of seafood and partner to the food service world."
The companies hope they can establish a dominant position in the gluten-free foods market. The current market leader is Colorado-based, publicly-traded Boulder Brands, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.
Elevation's offerings fall under the Ian's brand, while Slade Gorton offers seafood products under its ICYBAY brand.
The gluten-free market in the United States reached $4.2 billion last year, the two companies said, citing research by Packed Facts. Yet, the market is poised to grow to $6.6 million over the next four years.
Approximately 18 million Americans suffer from Celiac disease, which is characterized by a gluten intolerance, according to the Celiac Disease Center.
