Framingham firm: 1.7B smartphones to ship in 2021

A Framingham-based data firm is forecasting smartphone shipments will continue to climb and maintain positive growth for several years despite a slowing market.
The International Data Corp. (IDC) announced Tuesday it expects smartphone shipments to increase to just over 1.7 billion in 2021 from the 1.47 billion mark in 2016.
The market experienced its first single-digit growth year last year, increasing by just 2.5 percent over 2015, according to IDC.
That mark is expected to be even lower by year’s end at just a 1.7-percent growth.
Despite nominal growth, the average selling price of a smartphone is expected to increase by more than 7 percent, according to IDC.
