The National Park Service selected Framingham-based Perini Management Services for construction of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Visitor Center in Everglades National Park, Florida.
The $47-million project includes construction of the new two-story visitor center, a one-story remote concessions and storage building, underground utilities and major site improvements, according to a Tuesday press release from Perini.
The site improvements will ensure the roads and parking areas will be above king tide levels. The firm will dredge the Chokoloskee Bay, install a new floating dock system, and demolish and replace the bulkhead.
The project is expected to be complete in August 2025.
Perini Management Services is a subsidiary of Tutor Perini Corp., a publicly traded construction firm based in California with 8,100 full-time employees. Tutor Perini reported $3.8 billion in revenue in 2022, according to Yahoo! Finance.
The visitor center is named after Marjory Stoneman Douglas, a journalist who wrote the book “The Everglades: River of Grass,” which is the definitive description of the Everglades, according to the National Park Service. She was an advocate for protecting the natural environment in southern Florida.
