A fourth Massachusetts resident, a Middlesex County man, has died from a lung illness tied to vaping, the state Department of Public Health announced Wednesday.
The man, who was in his 70s, is the 36th confirmed case of e-cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury DPH has reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in roughly the past four months. His death follows a Worcester County man in his 50s who died in November, and a Middlesex County woman in her 40s and a woman in her 60s from Hampshire County.
In all, the state has received 341 reports from clinicians of suspected vaping associated lung injuries, known by the acronym EVALI.
Nationally, the CDC has reported nearly 2,600 EVALI cases leading to hospitalizations. A confirmed 55 related deaths have taken place across 27 states and the District of Columbia.
