Four groups have submitted initial proposals to open new charter schools and three other existing charter schools requested to expand their enrollment, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced Friday.
Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley will decide next month which applicants will be invited to submit full proposals, and final applications will be due by Oct. 16.
The proposed new charter schools are: a 640-seat Equity Lab Charter School serving grades 5-12 in Lynn; The Foundation Academy Charter School in Westfield, with maximum enrollment of 580 students in grades K-8; Jean Charles Academy in Lynn, serving grades pre-K-12 with a maximum enrollment of 1,100; and Leading Edge Charter School in Milford, which would serve up to 270 students in grades K-8.
Expansions were requested by Boston Day and Evening Academy Charter School, Pioneer Charter School of Science II in Saugus, and Veritas Preparatory Charter School in Springfield.
