Foundation Approves $1.6M In Grants Through June

The Greater Worcester Community Foundation said it approved more than $1.6 million in grants during the first half of the year.

Nearly $1 million of that was given through funds that allow donors to name the charity that will receive the money. Grants included $115,000 to the United Way of Central Massachusetts, $49,000 from the Robert W. Booth Fund to the Worcester Art Museum for youth education programs and $76,000 for the Worcester Tree Initiative.

In a statement, Ann T. Lisi, the foundation's executive director, said the foundation has been "especially mindful this year to help existing nonprofits fulfill their missions even as they reduce operations."

Last year, the foundation approved $5.3 million in grants. The foundation builds endowments to support community nonprofit organizations. It administers 400 funds valued at $94 million and offers services to donors and nonprofits.
