A vacant 225,000-square-foot building and former manufacturing facility of the Melville Shoe Corp. is proposed to be repurposed as a U-Haul storage and retail facility in Worcester.
The first floor of the 44 Hammond St. building will become 2,400 square feet of retail space, while the other three floors will be used for storage, said Jim Almonte, a landscape architect working on the project.
Almonte presented the plan to the Worcester Conservation Commission in November and the Planning Board in December. The project is before the Historical Commission on Thursday.
The site, at just over 2 acres, was sold to Arizona-based AMERCO Real Estate in April for $3.9 million.
AMERCO Real Estate is proposing to replace doors and windows, install overhead and man doors, install signage, remove a trash chute and extend a loading dock.
According to city records, the building was constructed in 1928.
