Efforts to turn a former Worcester hotel into a 90-unit permanent supportive housing development have received a boost from the federal government, after Congressman Jim McGovern (D-Worcester) secured $1.6 million for the project.
The funding will provide important support for the project, according to a Wednesday email newsletter from Worcester Community Housing Resources highlighting the additional funds. These funds were part of the $23 million in federal appropriations money that was received by Central Massachusetts entities.
The former Quality Inn & Suites, located at 50 Oriol Drive, is slated to become a supportive housing development seeking to provide wraparound services for individuals who have experienced homelessness or substance abuse issues.
The project was announced in November 2022 and received approvals from the Worcester Planning Board in January 2023. The development is being spearheaded by WCHR in partnership with Eliot Community Human Services of Lexington.
“Congressman McGovern has been a consistently engaged and supportive partner in the effort to address the region’s housing crisis by creating and sustaining affordable housing in Worcester County,” read the newsletter from WCHR. “WCHR looks forward to putting these funds to good use, maintaining the momentum on Oriol Drive.”
