A former employee of the Framingham Housing Authority was sentenced to five months in prison with three years of supervised release last week, four months after she pleaded guilty to embezzling money from her employer.
Rosa A. Famania, 33, of Milford will have to pay back the $70,649 that she stole in cash rental payments from the Framingham Housing Authority, and enter a residential or inpatient substance abuse facility after her release from prison. She was sentenced on Tuesday, April 25.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston, Famania began working for FHA as an accounting assistant in 2010, and was responsible for collecting cash rent payments from tenants, recording the payments in an electronic filing system, securing them in a locked cash box, and depositing them into a bank account.
Between February 2014 and August 2015, she stole approximately 181 cash payments totaling $70,649 from her employer and covered it up by adjusting tenants’ balances downward using FHA accounting software. Between July 2014 and July 2015, she deposited $55,000 in cash to her personal bank account, and from August 2014 to August 2015 transferred about $41,400 of that to another one of her accounts in the form of treasurer checks. Postal records also show that she obtained 19 U.S. Postal Service money orders totaling $17,900 in 2014.
She resigned in August of 2015, shortly after she was suspended in connection with an internal investigation involving missing rent payments.
