Robert Johnson, the former president of Becker College in Worcester, will join Western New England University as its new president.
Western New England, a private college in Springfield with about 3,800 students, announced Johnson's unanimous appointment from its board of trustees Monday. He is the school's sixth president, succeeding Anthony Caprio, who's served as Western New England's president for 24 years.
Johnson will begin his tenure Aug. 15.
Johnson was Becker's president from 2010 to 2017, before leaving to be the chancellor at UMass Dartmouth. He said on June 11 he was leaving UMass before his appointment at Western New England was announced. Previously to Becker, Johnson held leadership positions with Sinclair Community College, the University of Dayton and Central State University in Ohio, and Oakland University in Michigan.
