FLEXcon to manufacture NASA technology

FLEXcon, of Spencer, has signed an agreement with NASA to bring its patent-pending Glenn’s polyimide aerogels to the commercial market.

The exclusive license with the Technology Transfer Office at NASA’s Glenn Research Center will have FLEXcon, and its affiliate Blueshift International Materials Inc., marketing and manufacturing the product, which has many aerospace applications such as insulation for cryotanks and spacesuits. The flexible, heat-resistant aerogel has “down-to-Earth” applications that include insulating pipes, being sewn into protective clothing or molded to a panel to act as a heat shield in a car, according to the product page.

“We are delighted to secure a licensing agreement for Glenn’s technology,” Center Director Jim Free said in a statement. “It is extremely gratifying when the private sector adapts NASA innovations so they can make an impact in the marketplace. By licensing the polyimide aerogel technology to FLEXcon, Glenn will gain a commercialization partner.”
