The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced Monday its award of $725,418 in Shared Winter Streets and Spaces program grants for six cities in Central Massachusetts to take initiative on challenges during the winter months.

The funding is part of $2.8 million awarded to 19 communities and public transit agencies statewide.

Launched back in November, the program provides technical and funding assistance to help cities and towns in Massachusetts to conceive, design, and implement tactical changes to roads and parking areas in support of public health, safer mobility, and renewed commerce to especially focus on challenges faced this season.

The Central Massachusetts communities receiving grants included:

  • Auburn: $280,000 to expand an existing sidewalk, which will connect to Goddard Park, commercial centers, and the public high school and library, as well as add new pedestrian safety features.
  • Millbury: $70,418 to improve public spaces by adding new lighting, wayfinding, seating, trash receptacles, crosswalks, and planters to encourage areas of dining, shopping, visits, and establishment downtown.
  • Oxford: $300,000 to install new safety improvements within the downtown area, including enhanced crosswalks with pedestrian safety beacons, wheelchair-access curb ramps, improved pedestrian signals, and bus shelters.
  • Shirley: $30,000 to purchase outdoor heaters, traffic barriers, and picnic tables to support outdoor dining.
  • Shrewsbury: $45,000 to support the Shrewsbury Senior Center and provide residents with salt, buckets, and basic snow removal equipment, as well as new benches to encourage safe winter walking.
