Fitchburg State's Antonucci to retire

Fitchburg State University President Robert Antonucci will retire at the end of the 2014-2015 academic year, the school announced Monday morning.

The man responsible for constructing several new campus building and strengthening Fitchburg State University’s connection to the city announced Monday that he will retire next year.

After more than 11 years at the helm, Robert Antonucci will leave his role as university president following the 2014-15 academic year. Fitchburg State plans to begin a broad national search for his replacement in the fall.

Antonucci oversaw the opening of Fitchburg State’s first new academic building in three decades when the ribbon was cut on a new science center in 2013.

He also spearheaded construction of a new campus police station and a new exercise and sports science facility, as well as major renovations to the campus center, outdoor athletic facilities and dining commons.

Moreover, Antonucci pushed through the purchase of several distressed buildings between the campus and Downtown Fitchburg, according to a statement from the university.

Student enrollment and faculty size have increased under Antonucci’s tenure, which began in June 2003, with a major fundraising campaign completed during his tenure.

“It would be difficult to overstate the impact President Antonucci has had on this institution,” Carol Vittorioso, chairman of the university’s board, said in a statement. “He has overseen what is likely the most extensive transformation of the campus in its 120-year history.”

Antonucci is the former state education commissioner and held executive roles with several electronic educational software firms. He is married and has two children and five grandchildren.
