Fitchburg State To Hold Groundbreaking, Celebration

Fitchburg State University will simultaneously celebrate its new status as a university and the groundbreaking of a new science center Tuesday afternoon.

Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray is expected to attend the event, which is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the university's Weston Auditorium.

The science center is the first new academic building to be constructed at FSU since 1963. The 55,000-square-foot facility will include classrooms, laboratories and offices.

Fitchburg State and five other former state colleges, including Worcester State, became universities in July when Gov. Deval Patrick signed legislation making the change.

The change becomes legally effective tomorrow.
