Fitchburg State picks Georgia State administrator as new CFO

Fitchburg State University has named Travis Chambers, a former assistant dean at Georgia State University, as its new CFO, starting Dec. 1.

Chambers joins the leadership at a pivotal moment, as the university works to strengthen its financial strategies and continue advancing its mission of access and excellence, said Fitchburg State University President Donna Hodge.

“His leadership will be essential in aligning our financial strategies with the bold vision we have set for the years ahead. This work is about more than balancing budgets; it is about creating the capacity to grow, to innovate, and to deliver on our mission for every student,” Hodge said in the Monday press release announcing Chambers’ hiring.

Chambers brings more than a decade of experience in higher education finance. He most recently served as assistant dean for administrative and finance at Georgia State University, where he managed a budget of more than $40 million and advised university leadership on long-term planning and resource allocation.

Prior to that, he held several administrative roles at Georgia-based institutions, including director of financial administration at the Georgia Institute of Technology, senior budget manager at Agnes Scott College, and business manager at Kennesaw State University.

“I am honored and excited to join the leadership team at Fitchburg State University,” Chambers said in the press release. “Fitchburg State has a strong reputation for academic excellence and a deep commitment to its students. I look forward to building on its financial strength and supporting its mission of providing high-quality, accessible education.”

Chambers is succeeding William Cummings in the position. Cummings announced in a March 2023 LinkedIn post he would be leaving FSU for a role as director of equal opportunity at UMass Lowell. Following the hiring of President Donna Hodge in June, the school embarked on a national search for Cummings’ successor, according to an April 2023 LinkedIn post from Hodge.

Chambers earned a doctorate in education from the University of West Georgia, an MBA from Kennesaw State University, and a bachelor’s degree in business management from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
