After just two full terms in the House, Rep. Stephan Hay does not plan to seek re-election in 2020, an apparent change of plans that makes him the tenth incumbent and ninth House Democrat to announce they'll retire at the end of the year.
Hay, of Fitchburg, entered the House in 2016, winning a special election to succeed Fitchburg Mayor Stephen DiNatale on Beacon Hill representing the 3rd Worcester District, encompassing Fitchburg and one precinct in Lunenburg.
"My decision is personal and in the best interest of my family and our future," Hay said in a statement.
Hay is currently the top-ranking House Democrat on the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development, as its vice chairman. The chairmanship is currently vacant.
He spent 18 years on the Fitchburg City Council before becoming a state representative, including 10 years as the council's president. Hay has also worked as the director of First Parish Housing Fitchburg INC and executive director of the Concord Housing Authority.
As recently as this past weekend, Hay had confirmed to the local newspaper - the Sentinel and Enterprise - that he planned to seek re-election this fall. In a statement, he said he was proud of his work on education, veterans benefits, protecting women's access to health care, judicial reforms, protecting collective bargaining.
