Not to be confused with the Worcester Polytechnic Institute development of the same name, Fitchburg’s own Gateway Park will officially open early next month, officials announced.
The five-acre park is located on the North Nashua River. An opening ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 7 at 3 p.m.
The state’s Gateway City Parks program granted $350,000 for the park in 2010. Fitchburg is one of 24 so-called “gateway cities” designated by the state. The list of former industrial mill cities also includes Leominster and Worcester.
The parks program is meant to facilitate economic and community development in those cities.
