A Fitchburg-based manufacturer of furniture faced with a shortage of workers has deployed a robot to help improve operations.
Boston-based Rethink Robotics announced last week its robot, named Sawyer, has been been employed by Moduform, a Fitchburg manufacturer of furniture for hospitals, college dorms, libraries and other public spaces.
Moduform CEO Josh Weissman said furniture-making jobs can be temporary due to seasonal demand, causing employee turnover for a job that can be monotonous.
Since deploying Sawyer in the work cell to help assemble drawers, Moduform has consistently met demand by running longer operations and producing parts quicker.
The robot has been used on a variety of tasks and has improved the factory’s efficiency, Weissman said.
