Cutting tool manufacturer Simonds International, based in Fitchburg, announced Thursday a merger with Oregon-based saw company Burton Saw.

The merger will create a new entity -- Wood Fiber Holdings, Inc. -- which Simonds International bills as the leading producer and marketer of cutting tools and equipment for the wood fiber industry.

Wood fiber is material extracted from trees used to make paper and other products.

No financial details of the merger were disclosed.

The newly created company will continue to operate in the U.S. and Canada, with 12 facilities in North America. Clients of both companies and their subsidiaries will continue to be served during the merging process, Simonds said in the press release.

In a statement, Simonds CEO Ray Martino said the merger will combine two leading companies with a history of innovation.

“The cultures of the two companies are similar and will strengthen our service to the industry,” he said.

Simonds in May announced a similar merger with Scies B.G.R., a Canadian circular and band saw blades manufacturer.
