Fitchburg council approves zoning change for sports facility

The Fitchburg City Council has approved a zoning change that opens the door for a soccer sports development in West Fitchburg.
The council voted 9 to 2 in favor of the overlay district that would affect 150 acres of land off of Industrial Road and Westminster Hill Road. The zoning change was voted through Tuesday night following interest in the area for a possible 10 field soccer complex.
The soccer complex to be managed by Game on Soccer would include on 10,000 square foot building with indoor play fields, a restaurant, a pro shop and training rooms with parking for 447 cars with a total area of 40 acres, according to planning board documents.
According to the Telegram & Gazette, the developer will now go through a series of studies that it would not have committed to prior to the zoning change and then will proceed through the approval process through various boards, including the zoning board.
