The first Massachusetts location for Macy's outlet store Backstage will open this month at Solomon Pond Mall in Marlborough.
The store will open inside the existing Macy's store, taking up nearly 19,000 square feet on the store's first level. A grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, March 24 with giveaways for the first 200 customers and special events throughout the day, Macy's said.
Macy's opened the first Backstage stores in 2015 and now has 52 locations across the country. Of those, 40 are located inside existing Macy's stores, including the Macy's location in the Providence Place mall and all five Connecticut locations.
The Solomon Pond Mall location will be the seventh Backstage location in New England.
Macy's says it has a separate merchandise purchasing team for Backstage allowing it to sell products at 20 percent to 80 percent off traditional department store prices. Backstage carries some apparel and accessory brands not available at traditional Macy's stores.
Backstage takes Macy's into closer competition with off-price retailer TJX, which has offices in Framingham and Marlborough and owns the T.J.Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods chains. Other traditional department store retailers have launched outlet chains in recent years, including Nordstrom's Nordstrom Rack and Saks Fifth Avenue's Saks Off Fixth.
