Feds set aside $40M for victims of Framingham compounding center

Compensation funds totaling $40 million have been set aside by the U.S. Department of Justice for the victims and families impacted by Framingham pharmacy New England Compounding Center’s fungal meningitis outbreak of 2012, according to U.S. Congressman Mike Bishop (R-MI).

Of the 778 Americans who became sick, 76 have died from NECC’s tainted steroid injections, according to a release from the congressman’s office. The tainted compounds were distributed in October 2012 to patients from 23 states.

After a two-year investigation, 14 individuals have been charged with 131 criminal acts, including a combined 25 counts of second-degree murder in Michigan, Tennessee, Indiana, Virginia, Maryland, Florida and North Carolina, according to the release.

The New England Compound Center filed for bankruptcy in December 2012, and the various lawsuits against the company were settled for $200 million in May 2015.

The additional $40 million the U.S. Department of Justice set aside for further victim relief came from federal criminal fines, penalties and forfeited bail bonds, according to the congressman, and do not include any taxpayer dollars.
