The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking to prohibit the Christian Praise International Church from operating an unlicensed radio station in Worcester.
The civil complaint claims Vasco Oburoni and the church have been operating a radio broadcast station in Worcester on 97.1 without a license from the Federal Communications Commission.
Oburoni and the church previously did the same on 102.3, the complaint alleges.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts, the FCC issued multiple warnings and a forfeiture order for $15,000 against Oburoni, who ultimately agreed to a payment plan but later began operating illegally on a different frequency.
Another broadcaster, 102.5 WKLB, has complained the Oburoni’s station has interfered with radio signals, according to FCC complaints.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Andrew Lelling said illegal broadcasts could interfere with public safety and other critical radio communications.
“Like any member of the community, the operators of these illegal stations could have applied for radio licenses and operated their stations in compliance with the law,” he said. “When they choose to operate illegally, and continue those operations after being warned multiple times, action must be taken.”
