The number of Americans signed up for health insurance coverage through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace was more than 11.5 million as of Dec. 24, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Tuesday.
That’s an increase of 286,000 plan selections compared to the same period in 2015, and HHS said it refutes predictions that 2017 premium changes would lead to sharp declines in enrollment.
According to HHS, a broad cross-section of Americans rely on the marketplace to access health insurance plans, with 39 states using HealthCare.gov as an enrollment platform. The remainder of the states, including Massachusetts, operate their own marketplaces.
More than eight in 10 people, or 9.3 million, who are signed up for 2017 plans through the federal marketplace will receive premium tax credits based on income guidelines to help manage the cost of insurance premiums, HHS said.
Open enrollment continues through Jan. 31.
