Since the start of 2008, the signs of an economic slowdown have been all around us. And in the last several weeks, we’ve all read and heard an awful lot about how bad our economy is and is going to be.

But Central Massachusetts has its bright spots and the 2008 Top Growth issue is the perfect antidote to the “doom and gloom” permeating so much of the business world today.

Rays Of Hope

To gain some perspective on our local economy, you need only quickly glance at our lists, which start on page 16, to learn that companies (both private and nonprofit) in our own backyard are growing and itching for more. Granted our lists were based on 2007 data, but many of the firms on this list report that their niche businesses are weathering the current mess just fine.

Take GoodFellas Construction Management, the number one company on our list, thanks to the impressive 550 percent revenue growth the fledging company posted from 2005 to 2007. In a special WBJ profile the company’s co-founder Jospeh Kupstas reports that this winter is shaping up to be the four-year-old company’s busiest.

Along with GoodFellas, we’ve written extended profiles on three other private companies in this very special issue. They are: Blue Cod Technologies, AIS and eClinicalWorks. We decided to highlight these firms based on their three-year percent revenue growth within size categories. By taking into consideration the size of the firm (based on the number of Massachusetts employees) we are highlighting a broader array of firms than in years past.

We should also point out that this year’s private companies list features 10 private companies that are brand new to our list and 25 returning champions. Visit WBJournal.com and you can check out a complete history of the WBJ’s Top Growth lists, reaching all the way back until 1998.

We hope our Top Growth lists continue to grow, but to do that we need your help. If you know of a private company or nonprofit that’s on the fast track, please e-mail editorial@wbjournal.com so we can add that organization to our database for next year.

Also, please click here for more about our Top Growth event, which is scheduled for Nov. 17 and will feature a timely panel discussion on the current economy.

In closing, we hope you learn something that you can apply to your own company from the stories included in this special section, and we hope they provide a good dose of optimism to counteract the bad news about the national economy.
