Family of cop injured in Marathon shootout to get death benefit

The family of a Boston cop who died a year after sustaining head injuries in the Watertown shootout with the Boston Marathon bombers will receive a one-time $150,000 death benefit from the state.

The State Retirement Board on Thursday approved the line-of-duty death benefit for the family of Boston police officer Dennis Simmonds, who died a year after the bombings on April 10, 2014 after a medical incident at the Boston Police Academy.

"The State Retirement board reviewed the medical and incident reports and have determined that officer Simmonds' death was a result of injuries sustained in the line of duty," said Matt Sheaff, a spokesman for Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, who chairs the Retirement Board.
