Fallon hires chief medical officer, SVP

Two former executives are returning to Worcester insurance firm Fallon Health after several years away from the company.

Carolyn Langer, who was Fallon’s medical director from 2005 to 2008, has returned to take on the role of chief medical officer.

Before coming back to Fallon, Langer served as chief medical officer and director of clinical affairs at MassHealth. The retired colonel and former flight surgeon in the Army National Guard also held previous roles with Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Tufts Health Care and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.

Mary Ritter, a former chief operating officer, chief strategy officer, and senior vice president, is rejoining the company as senior vice president of strategy and business development.

Ritter, a previous WBJ Outstanding Women in Business and 40 Under Forty winner, served in the aforementioned roles for 11 years after which she owned and operated Worcester-based Maywood Consulting that offered strategic planning and advisory services to healthcare, human services and cultural organizations.

The new hires add two women to the ranks of Central Massachusetts executives, where women are not particularly well represented.

According to Fallon, women make up 73 percent of the company’s leadership of managers and above, and 81-percent of overall employees. A WBJ report earlier in February found Fallon had women in three of its 10 senior executive roles and four of its 12 board members. With these new hires and changes to the board, Fallon has five women in its 10 senior executive roles and three women in its now 10-member board member.

That total percentage of 40 percent of female executive and board leaders at Fallon is above the 35-percent average for Central Massachusetts public and private corporations, nonprofit entities and financial institutions. For healthcare organizations, including Fallon, the rate was 31 percent.
