Fallon Health of Worcester and the Worcester Red Sox teamed up for the second year for their Strike Out Hunger Campaign, raising $50,000 for the Worcester County Food Bank in Shrewsbury.
The donation was presented to the Food Bank in a ceremony before Sunday’s game at Polar Park.
Jean McMurray, executive director of the food bank was recognized during the ceremony, as was Rosalee Pham, clinical integration navigator for NaviCare at Fallon Health, for helping the community during the COVID pandemic, and Richard Burke, president and CEO of Fallon Health.
“In Worcester County, hunger is a serious problem. Thousands of families in the communities we serve are turning to food pantries and meal programs. We are committed to purposefully addressing food insecurity and are proud to partner with community organizations to further reach those in need,” said Richard Burke in a Aug. 30 press release.
The WooSox have also been collecting food for the food bank throughout the season as part of Fallon Family Funday Sundays.
The Worcester County Food Bank is a 509(a)(1) organization, meaning it is primarily funded by the public rather than a few large donors. It is part of a Chicago-based national network of food banks called Feeding America.
