The president and CEO of Worcester insurer Fallon Health, Richard Burke, will serve as the new board chair of the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans for the remainder of 2021, the industry association announced on Thursday.
Burke is filling the vacancy created by former chair and Tufts Health Plan CEO Thomas Croswell’s resignation. Croswell is retiring from his role at Tufts this summer.
The fourth highest-paid nonprofit chief executive in Central Massachusetts with total compensation at $1.2 million, Burke has served as Fallon Health’s CEO since 2015 and has been with the organization for 20 years. He serves on the boards of Assumption University in Worcester, Worcester Business Development Corp., and the national trade association Alliance of Community Health Plans, based in Washington, D.C.
The Massachusetts Association of Health Plans includes 16 health plans and two behavioral health organizations, and covers nearly 3 million Massachusetts residents.
Fallon Health is the fifth largest health insurer in Massachusetts with more than 173,000 members in 2020.
