Ex-Marlborough Hospital Chief Tapped For Health Secretary

Former Marlborough Hospital president John Polanowicz has been named the state’s Secretary of the Executive Office of Health and Human Services.

Appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick, Polanowicz, currently president of St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton, will replace Dr. JudyAnn Bigby.

Bigby held the office since 2007.

According to the Patrick administration, Polanowicz “brings equal parts management experience and understanding of the important missions of the executive branch’s largest secretariat.”

The Massachusetts Hospital Association praised the appointment, with President and CEO Lynn Nicholas saying, "John has seen how health care, public health, and human services can and must function effectively together to reach their full potential. MHA looks forward to working with him to achieve the ambitious payment and delivery system reform goals the commonwealth has set out."

A Northborough resident, Polanowicz has served as president of St. Elizabeth’s since 2011, after spending eight years as head of Marlborough Hospital.

While in Marlborough, Polanowicz “bolstered patient care by establishing new service lines, building relationships with physician groups and investing in emerging technologies,” according to a press release from Patrick’s office.

Polanowicz also led a financial turnaround that led to five consecutive years of positive financial results for the hospital.

He was also previously vice president of operations at UMass Memorial Medical Center and is a former company commander in the U.S. Army. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and holds an MBA from Stanford University.
