Evergreen Breaks Ground In China

Marlborough-based Evergreen Solar Inc. and its Chinese manufacturing partner Jiawei Solarchina Co. today held a groundbreaking ceremony for their new manufacturing plants in Wuhan, China.

Evergreen CEO Richard Feldt and senior management from Jiawei were joined by several local government officials for the groundbreaking. Construction of the plants began in July and is expected to be complete in early 2010.

The project cost is about $17 million for each of two plants to be used by Evergreen and Jiawei and is being funded by loans from the Wuhan government.

At its leased plant, Evergreen will manufacture its "string ribbon" silicon wafers. At its plant, Jiawei will process the wafers into Evergreen-branded solar panels.

Evergreen, which has a massive manufacturing plant in Devens and another in Michigan, recently told the WBJ that the extremely difficult finance and credit markets in the Unites States drove the company to establish manufacturing operations in China. To read more, click here.
