Framingham-based Staples has been honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its continued energy efficiency achievements.

The company announced Thursday that it had received a 2016 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award from the EPA, the organization’s highest ENERGY STAR award. Staples has been an ENERGY STAR partner since 1992 and has 612 buildings certified through the program, including 33 recertifications in 2015.

The company is also part of the EPA Better Buildings Challenge that calls for a reduction in energy intensity of 25 percent by 2020 and reducing its carbon footprint by 50 percent by 2025.
