Fitchburg has received a $150,500 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to help clean up a polluted, two-acre site at 465 Westminster St.
The property is home to the Central Steam Plant facility, which was built in 1928 and provided steam and electricity to several paper mills along the Nashua River. The site’s soil and groundwater are polluted with metals and various other inorganic materials.
In a statement, Fitchburg Mayor Lisa Wong said the clean-up of the Central Steam site will allow for the redevelopment and reuse of the Central Steam building. The building itself is in need of asbestos removal, Wong said.
