Worcester's Regional Environmental Council Inc. (REC) will receive a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency this afternoon.
Koby Owusu-Ansah, environmental health and justice program director at REC, said the money will be used for a two-year assessment of environmental and socio-economic issues in several of Worcester's low-income neighborhoods. After the information is collected, he said, the organization may ask for additional EPA funding to address the most pressing issues.
The grant is part of the EPA's significant Community Action for a Renewed Environment program, which helps community organizations address toxic pollution.
EPA regional administrator Curt Spalding will present the grant this afternoon at 18 Winslow St. in Worcester. Mayor Joseph O'Brien and a representative of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development will take part in the check presentation.
